Screening of the award winning documentary James Baldwin: The Price of the Ticket, followed by a discussion and optional vegetarian dinner.
Now considered a documentary classic, The Price of the Ticket by Karen Thorsen premiered in 1990, and was recently restored in honor of the 90th anniversary of the birth of James Baldwin (1924–1987), American essayist, novelist, playwright, poet, and civil rights activist. An emotional portrait, a social critique, and a passionate plea for human equality, its extensive verite footage allows Baldwin to tell his own story: exploring what it means to be born black, impoverished, gay, and gifted in a world that has yet to understand that "all men are brothers." "On-camera witnesses" include the late Maya Angelou (she reads passages from the author's writings), Amiri Baraka, David Leeming, Bobby Short, and William Styron. The film runs 87 minutes.
Proceeds of the dinner support the Children's Summer Program at Camp Linden. Camp Linden, located on the Brandywine in Chester County, affords an opportunity for inner city children to experience the wonders of nature. Each week day a different groups of children enrolled in an urban day camp visits Camp Linden and returns the same day for six weeks. The program includes gardening, nature walks, swimming instruction, and Indian lore. Camp Linden is owned and operated by the Philadelphia Ethical Society. All costs of the Children's Program are covered by fundraising, including charitable grants, individual cotributions, and proceeds from events like this one,
